Pet Zone Smart Scoop Automatic Litter Box – Full Review

There are some household chores no one looks forward to, and scooping the cat box is at the top of the list! The Pet Zone Smart Scoop automatic litter box takes care of this unpleasant task for you, so you can simply enjoy your pet’s companionship and deal with waste only when it’s time to empty the disposal compartment.

Like most other automatic litter boxes, the Smart Scoop is equipped with a sensor that triggers a cleaning cycle. The cycle begins 15 minutes after your cat leaves the box, and it makes less noise than some other units that we’ve tried. The rake picks up the waste and deposits it into a chamber without wasting any clean litter, saving you money in the long run.

After the scooping process is complete, the rake re-sets itself in its original position, leaving the litterbox ready for your pet’s next trip to the bathroom. When the waste compartment becomes full, you simply open it up, remove the bag, tie it off, and drop it into the garbage. Once you replace the bag with a new one, just close the lid and let the unit keep on doing its job until next time.

These are just a few highlights. Read on for more details about the pros and cons that come with owning the Smart Scoop Automatic litter box.

Deep Design for Less Spilled LitterPet Zone Smart Scoop Automatic Litter Box-1

If your cat has a tendency to fling litter when covering waste, you’ll appreciate the Smart Scoop for its high sides, which do a good job of catching the litter and keeping it in the box instead of on the floor. On the con side, there is no optional hood for this litter box. You can, however, put it inside of a litter enclosure, which makes it look like just another piece of furniture while giving your cat more privacy and containing spilled litter to a small area.

Works with Different Types of Litter

Most automatic litterboxes are compatible only with one type of litter. The Pet Zone Smart Scoop is different. It will work with crystal litter as well as any type of clumping litter, including eco-friendly types. The only thing to be aware of is that some of the natural kitty litter brands don’t clump tightly, and the clumps sometimes disintegrate when being cleaned up. If you’re choosy about how well your cat’s litter clumps though, this won’t be a problem.

Another advantage to this feature is that it’s very easy to transition your pet to the new litterbox, as you can keep on using the same litter brand that they’re accustomed to. Since the box smells exactly like the one your cat is using already (but cleaner!) making the switch is likely to be effortless.

Fast, Simple Cleaning Process

Pet Zone Smart Scoop Automatic Litter Box-3

Most of today’s automatic litter boxes are pretty easy to clean and maintain, and Pet Zone’s Smart Scoop definitely meets ease of use expectations. When the waste bag is full, you simply open the lid, remove the bag, tie it closed, and discard it. If you have just one cat, you’ll need to do this about once a week, depending on how frequently your pet uses the litter box. With two cats, you might find yourself cleaning out the compartment every 4 to 5 days, or perhaps more often if your pets produce a lot of waste.

Pet Zone suggests that you change the litter in the Smart Scoop once each month to help keep your home smelling fresh, plus that you wipe any dust off the outside of the motor unit as needed.

Little to No Odor

Since the rake is activated 15 minutes after your pet uses the litter box, you’re likely to notice a little bit of odor right after they go, particularly if they’re not really into covering up their waste. Once everything is transferred to the storage compartment, there’s no odor to speak of, thanks to a carbon filter. Check the bin occasionally to gauge how full it is. If you forget to clean it out, you’ll notice an odor when it becomes over-full.

Economical Option

The Pet Zone Smart Scoop automatic litter box has a smaller price tag than some others we’ve reviewed, which makes sense as it comes with fewer features. It also saves you money by cleaning up only the soiled litter, and depending on the number of cats you have, you’ll probably discover that you’re buying litter less frequently and using far less of it every week. This is one automatic litterbox that is sure to pay for itself quickly.

Suitable for Households with Multiple Cats

If you have more than one cat, you’ll find that the Smart Scoop automatic litter box keeps up with them easily. If you have more than two cats, you might want to consider following the standard practice of getting an extra litterbox for each cat, however some other reviewers with multiple cats have easily gotten away with having just one cat box. Keep in mind that multiple pets create more waste, and you’ll have to empty the box more frequently; however, this is something that’s true of all litter boxes (with the exception of the ones that flush!)

“Is this a metal rake, or a plastic one?”

The rake is metal.

“Where does the waste go?”

When the rake passes through the litter, it lifts the clumps up and transfers them to a waste chamber located at the end of the box. The compartment’s lid opens up automatically when the rake is activated, and it closes after waste is deposited.

“Does this unit work with crystal cat litter?”

Yes. You will need to replace the crystals like usual, though. One bonus to this is that only fecal matter ends up in the waste compartment and you can empty it less frequently.

“Is the Smart Scoop battery operated?”

No, you have to plug it in.

“Can I use natural cat litter?”

Yes. You can use natural brands, as long as you choose one that forms tight clumps.

“Can I take the litter box apart to wash it?”

Yes. Just disassemble it according to the manufacturer’s instructions (you won’t need tools like with some other brands), and then wash the rake, the waste bin, and the litter area in hot, soapy water.

“Will this litterbox work for kittens?”

Yes. You will probably find that you need to add a ramp that makes it easier for your kittens to climb in and out of the box, though. Make sure that you show your kitten where the bathroom is and give them a little time to get used to using it before you plug it in.

Pet Zone Smart Scoop Automatic Litter Box-4

The Pet Zone Smart Scoop Automatic Litterbox does the scooping so you don’t have to do nearly as much dirty work. It gives your cat plenty of time to take care of business before raking the litter clean, and it is very easy to empty the waste compartment. You can use any kind of clumping litter, including natural brands, and you also have the option of using crystal litter if you prefer. This automatic litterbox costs quite a bit less than some others on the market, and it does a good job of preventing wasted litter, which is likely to provide you with additional cost savings. Of course, there’s a certain amount of value to be had in having the litter box do the scooping for you, too!
